At its first digital general assembly on 4 February 2025, the Swiss InsurTech Hub (SIH) announced its partnership and collaboration with Groupe Mutuel. The company is the number one health insurer in French-speaking Switzerland and ranks third in Switzerland. thebrokernews reports on the role of the insurer in the Swiss health insurance industry.
Gilles Burnier, Senior Innovation Expert at Groupe Mutuel, outlined the company’s essential mission in inspiring words: to be a reliable, lifelong partner for both private and corporate customers. What makes this partnership special? Groupe Mutuel (GM) covers a wide range of health and pension solutions with its comprehensive product portfolio: from insurance coverage in the areas of health, financial security, legal and material security and employment to occupational pension plans and occupational health management. This holistic approach sets it apart from other providers.
With a workforce of around 3,000 employees, Groupe Mutuel serves approximately 1.5 million private customers and 30,000 corporate customers, and generates a considerable turnover of around CHF 6 billion. 300 employees work in the IT department alone, with 50 dedicated exclusively to data analysis, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Transformation of the digital healthcare landscape
The latest changes in the digital health landscape are also forcing Groupe Mutuel to adapt its strategy. Customers of all ages, but especially the younger generations, are increasingly willing to use digital tools. At the same time, interest in personal interactions is declining. The consequences are clear: the insurer has continuously increased its digitalisation efforts. The user-friendliness of the digital platforms and apps is at the centre of these efforts to meet the dynamic demands of customers.
The GM app is the proud recipient of numerous awards that demonstrate the continuous improvement of service quality. One innovative step that has recently been taken in this context is the integration of the symptom checker Ada. As an alternative first point of contact or low-threshold preliminary step to a doctor’s appointment, this tool provides personalised treatment recommendations. This functionality is an example of how customer service is constantly being optimised, with the guiding principle of ‘the customer is king’ remaining central.
Data as a key resource
In the context of the current boom in artificial intelligence (AI), data is becoming more important than ever. Groupe Mutuel’s clearly defined data and AI strategy is driven by the aforementioned team of around 50 experts in data science and machine learning, who are dedicated to integrating and optimising data flows.
Groupe Mutuel’s focus on innovation
Another forward-looking project is Tech4Eva, which was launched in cooperation with the EPFL Innovation Park. This global programme promotes innovative health solutions for women and is aimed at start-ups working in this field. It is important to note that Groupe Mutuel does not invest in the emerging companies themselves, but provides a platform where young entrepreneurs can meet investors and industry partners in the field of women’s health. To date, more than CHF 200 million has been raised for a total of 94 innovative product solutions.
Partnership for the future
The partnership between the Swiss InsurTech Hub and Groupe Mutuel marks a significant step in the digital transformation of the Swiss insurance landscape. With its clear focus on innovation, customer satisfaction and data-driven approaches, Groupe Mutuel is positioning itself not only as an industry leader but also as a reliable partner for the future. These developments are not only promising but also essential for the transformation of the industry.
