thebrokernews Podcast Episode 6: Newton Bezeng and BeNew Insurance’s Mission to Transform Micro-Insurance in Africa.

Stéphane Martin, co-founder of Risk-!n, did not start his career in risk management, but in sales and marketing. In 2003, he was presented with a unique opportunity when he was asked to become a risk manager for Arcelor, a global steel company. Although he had no previous experience, he accepted the challenge and learned risk management from the ground up. His journey continued through mergers and corporate positions, which shaped his passion for this field.

Stéphane noticed a gap in the Swiss risk management community – professionals lacked a platform for meaningful exchange. Before Risk-!n, he founded the Swiss Risk Management Forum, an informal peer group. But in 2018, after a tearful conversation with a friend, Risk-!n was born.

The conference started small (130 participants), but has since grown to over 300 participants and has become the most important risk management event in Switzerland. Its mission? Breaking silos, building bridges – bringing together corporate risk managers, insurance professionals and executives to promote collaboration.

Key topics for Risk-!n 2025

1. cyber risks: a constantly evolving threat

Cyber threats aren’t going away – they’re getting worse. As AI risks increase, organizations need to stay one step ahead. RISK-IN provides in-depth insights into data protection, emerging threats and AI-driven security solutions.

2 AI: opportunity or risk?

AI tools are transforming entire industries, but the lack of transparency is a cause for concern. RISK-IN workshops help professionals navigate AI integration responsibly and ensure risk managers understand both the benefits and the dangers.

3 ESG: More than just compliance

ESG is not just about reporting – it’s a competitive advantage. Younger generations (such as Generation Z) value sustainability when choosing their employer. RISK-IN explores how ESG can promote long-term resilience and talent retention.

4. personnel risk: the overlooked challenge

Stéphane describes personnel risk as the “least sexy but most complex” topic. It includes:

  • Burnout and mental health (Stéphane spoke openly about his own burnout experiences)
  • Leadership and training gaps (promoting technical experts without leadership qualities backfires)
  • Travel and job security

Companies need to monitor stress indicators and promote a supportive culture – before crises break out.
